Secretariat….. (Mute Monday)
posted by: VixenSecretariat was born in 1970 and at first considered “too pretty” to be
a good racehorse. During his first season in 1972, he proved any early
doubters wrong, claiming eight consecutive victories and becoming the
first of only two 2-year-olds to ever be crowned Horse Of The Year.
There is no disputing that Secretariat, an American Thoroughbred racehorse and Triple Crown winner, was the greatest and most celebrated race horse of all time. His owner had nicknamed him “Big Red” because of his size and brilliant chestnut color.
Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973. Capturing the triple crown requires the horse to win The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes, and The Belmont Stakes. Secretariat finished in miraculous fashion by winning the Belmont by 31 lengths, a new world record time which still stands today, along with his record set at the Kentucky Derby.
Secretariat was mourned by millions following his death in 1989.
He was one of only three non-humans ranked on ESPN’s “100 Greatest Athletes of the Twentieth Century”, and was also honored in 1999 by the United States Postal Service who issued a stamp bearing his likeness.

Whirlwind of a weekend! The kiddos didn’t have school Friday bc of a snow day, which made it a three-day weekend. Saturday morning I drove the kiddos to my (ex) SIL’s house bc all four cousins were spending the night with their grandparents (AKA- my ex’s parents).
PC and I met with friends of his for lunch at a restaurant we love and visit frequently. Where I was served a salad I had ordered with out chicken with chicken, not once. ….But twice. *barf* The waitress was exceedingly nice and apologetic. She went out of her way, felt super badly. The manager went out of his way. Comped the salad, as well as the replacement meal PC ordered for me instead, AND a dessert, AND supplied me with a FREE beer coupon for our next visit.
PC and I went to see “Knowing“. It was riveting, edge of your seat action, numerous controversial topics and the ENDING!!! WHOA! Great movie.
I have a very geriatric, big dog. Once upon a time, many years ago (as I have mentioned), I ran a wolf-hybrid rescue. There is one remaining, her name is Aleka and she’s almost 14yro. Her hips don’t work very well, she’s a bit senile but the sweetest animal.
She disappeared on Saturday. She never wanders far from the house. We spent hours searching and calling for her over the weekend. We were worried sick. With an animal of this age (and size), you have a knowing of the inevitable. And you worry and wonder. She has surprised us time and time again. We were relieved when she made it the winter before. And it’s been a pleasant surprise that she had made it yet another. To have her turn up missing, was bizarre and terribly worrisome. After searching and visiting one of the shelters in our area, she turned up on the website of the shelter least close to us. She had been hit by a car and taken to CSU. Once stabilized she was transferred to the shelter. The poor girl. I’m relieved she’s safe and was taken care of. I’ll be bailing her out tomorrow. Sad events but I’m *beyond* relieved to have found her and know. That was the worst….the unknowing.

So happy you found your dog.
My boyfriend has a wolf-hybrid dog, she is absolutely gorgeous. I fell in love with her the first time I met her.
I’m glad your dog was found and well taken care of.
Happy Monday.

Those pics of Secretariat are spectacular. Years ago I had the chance to stand along the rail on Belmont Park the week of the Stakes and watch the thoroughbreds work out. I never had an appreciation for how big and powerful they are until one passed by at full gallop. Holy shit…
Glad to hear about your dog!!

I am so happy you have found your girl! My prayers are with her for a quick recovery.
I adored everything, the pictures and words, on Secretariat. Seeing his Belmont win still gives me shivers. In my lifetime, I doubt we will see another horse of his amazing magnitude.
Those were great years for racing. My other favorite, Ruffian, had her brief, but brilliant career around the same time.
I hope your week is beautiful, sweetie.

Hubman- they are amazing animals. Personally a huge fan of Arabian horses, but TB’s closely follow. Majestic creatures. :)

VK- I *adore* Ruffian as well! The fact that she was a filly makes her even more awesome. :)

I cannot imagine the stress of those hours when you didn’t know where Aleka was! I’m glad you found her and that she was taken care of. I bet you’ll be thrilled to be “bailing” her out!

interesting about the horse. my gmanager *the horse whisperer* owns race horses. i’ve been hearing about it plenty in the nearly 9 years i’ve worked with him.
beautiful picture vixen. what a gorgeous pose, and those shoes are to die for.
good to hear about finding the sweet puppy dog. actually, my cat was found outside during a snow storm with frostbite. i didn’t really want a cat, but we fixed him up and he’s been here since then. :)

awwww, I hope your furry friend pulls through OK. At least the person was kind enough to not just drive away.
