Killing me softly with those words (no CQW)

No CQW this week. I just don’t have it in me.

I mentioned Monday that my furbaby Mick was very sick and had been for bit with this ‘mystery illness’.  After an appointment which left the vet scratching her head (this is the 3rd vet he has been too, who couldn’t figure out what was causing him to be so sick), she sent an extensive blood panel up to CSU (it’s a very well known veterinary teaching hospital).  We were guessing it might possibly be Lymes Disease.  Which, I was relieved to hear is treatable.  He had a very high fever, borderline fatal.  But after deciding that the stress of keeping him over night outweighed the good it would do to hospitalize, she sent him home on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory/pain medicine.

With in 30min of giving him the new pills last night he perked up and seemed the closest he had been of ‘his old self’ in weeks.  He slept comfortably, bwtn PC and I.  The weirdest thing about his ‘illness’ is that his neck is incredibly sore and he has little to no movement with out it causing him a great amount of pain.  He finally seemed to be on an uphill swing.

Until this morning.  Even after his pills, he never perked up.  Then the call came from the vet, with the results from the bloodwork that sent me into a spiral…..  The voicemail said things like “liver damage”, “dangerously low electrolytes”, “heart failure”, “needed to be hospitalized immediately”.  I had been out with the kids at the pool, I rushed home to bring Mick in.  When we met with his vet she explained how she had been startled and shocked at his results.  How out of kilt things were with it, but at the same time that they said nothing definitive.  Everything we thought it might be, that he had been tested for (Lyme, Heart Worm, other parasites), showed up negative.  She doesn’t know what is wrong with him.  But he is severely sick.  Much more than we were aware of.  She is throwing out a vague label- “Bacterial Hepatitis”.  Treating him aggressively for the infection and to get his electrolytes back where they should be.

So we left him.  My baby is spending the night hooked up to IV’s. He’s never spent the night away from home.  He’s become a shell of the dog he once was.  Which, he’s an Australian Cattle Dog, they are KNOWN for their upbeat, jovial, personalities.  He is the smartest dog I have ever met.  He never leaves my side.  He gives the best hugs and lives to go on my morning runs, ride in the car and feed the animals with me.  I love this dog with all my heart…..he’s not even two.  He’s *got* to get better or my heart will just break in two.

*sigh*

So anyways.  Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Oh.  And Happy Hump Day.

Oh…I’m so sorry. I know it must be terribly difficult for you.

I don’t know if this will help, but I suppose it’s worth a shot. My dog I mentioned to you before had a strange disease that was hard to diagnose. It turned out she would start bleeding internally and because of all the blood lose she couldn’t function. She had to have blood transfusions and all that kind of stuff. She even spent a week at the University of Tennessee vet hospital. The only way to treat her was high doses of prednisone, which made her drink tons of water so she had to pee all the time. The 3rd bought of this within 3 years was too much for her.

I’m sure your vet would have figured it out if our dogs have the same thing. The low platelet count and bruising from the internal bleeding usually gives it away. But just in case it’s a mild case, the bruising may not show up.

I’m hoping for the best. Super big hugs for you and the family.

That’s so sad, Vixen. I hope the vets can figure out what’s going on and he gets better. Sending a big virtual hug your way….

CRAP! That wasn’t the news I hoped to hear, and I’m sure it wasn’t anywhere near what you’d hoped to hear.

Thoughts are with all of you as you navigate this illness!

Awww sweetie I’m so sorry, I know how you feel. That happened to us, too, a seemingly healthy kittie one day, and then boom. Heart disease, liver disease etc etc. But your vets at least figured something out, and Mick is young.

Sending a *hug* your way! I know it’s hard when they’re your baby. My English Mastiff went through bouts where she would break out in hives externally and internally (esp. in her lungs) and cause respiratory failure. Finally, after a year of this she was sent to Purdue and they found out she had a rare genetic disorder that is prevalent in Bernese Mountain dogs but because those are a descendent of the Eng. Mastiff she got ‘lucky’ and was born with it too. I’m sure they are thinking of everything but sometimes checking ‘outside the box’ is where the answers are lying.

We’ll say a pray and keep our fingers crossed for the best.

TUG- that’s horrible about your dog. :( Mick doesn’t have internal bleeding. His electrolytes are incredibly low, which is causing issues with his heart and liver. She is making a generic guess at this time that it’s a nasty bacterial infection.
