There is a new Cameron Diaz movie coming the first part of November called The Box. In the movie she is presented with a box and told….. If you push the button 2 things will happen-
- Someone, somewhere in the world that you don’t know will die
- You will receive a payment of 1 million dollars
Will you push the button? Be honest!
One more thing.
There are consequences.
If you don’t push the button someone in your family will die.
Does that effect/change your answer????
(my internet has been very wonky all night so I’m going to go ahead and post this and answer myself in the comments)
******
Happy HUMP Day!!!

I may be absolutely heartless, but yeah, I’d totally push the button.

Initially…. no way. I couldn’t have that on my shoulders. Knowing I had ended someone’s life bc of a choice I had made. I *obsess* and the guilt would eat me alive. I know me and know there is no way I could.
Knowing someone I love will die if I don’t? Yeah sorry, pushing the button. My family means the world to me. Cunning and cut-throat I am not but family loyal, absolutely.

Oh, I missed that last part in the commercial. It may suck that someone is going to die, but I’m not going to let a family member die first. Guess I’ll be pushing the button and taking the money. Push or no push you’re allowing someone to die. I guess the question here is does the fact that you receive money for pushing make it worse? IDK? It’s a no win situation. But I still won’t let someone in my family die, they will always come first over every single one of you :P

I have no idea. If it were simply just the first part (push the button for a million, but someone somewhere dies), then no. I wouldn’t push the button. With the family added, it changes things. I would probably look for any possible loop hole, but in the end, if it saves a family member, I’d push the button.

I’m really looking forward to that movie. Initially my answer was “no way” as well but once the twist was thrown in about someone in my family I would do it.

Given the choice of one my family dying OR some stranger AND I got a $1million, yeah, I’m pushing the button. Of course, there is someone else in the world who is thinking the same thing, and my family (or me!) is the stranger to him.
I think the dilemma but without the don’t-push-the-button consequence is a more interesting moral argument. Do we value $1million more than a strangers life? Now that’s an interesting question!

This might generate some heat, but I wouldn’t do it. I don’t believe in caving into situational ethics.
If someone wants to kill me or one of my family members, things get quite objective. I am going to do everything I can to defend us from a would-be murderer. But they’re the threat and murderer. Not me.
Too many people construct such situations in every day life to get away with things they shouldn’t.
My take is that we should stand for what is right.

Before the consequence part – I would have said no way. With the don’t push the button consequence part – that raised the bar. Depends *who* in the family (just kidding!) ;-). In that case – then I’d push the button, to save a family member, not for the money (someone is going to go either way).

I agree with PC on this one. It comes to ethics. I think everyone saying yes is looking at this like, for One million and I don’t know the person….sure. In the end what most over look is that it’s murder. Change it around like this…random person, you still get the money and get away with it but you have to shoot the person with a gun yourself while looking right into their eyes. Pushing the button or shooting them the person still dies because you murdered them. Another scenario… Suppose the you push the button and the person that dies is someones child..would it bother you killing someones child because of money. Before jumping out and saying yes you really have to think of all the possibilities.

Hubman- I think ultimately that is the moral dilemma they are asking. Def interesting!
Vixen Says:October 28th, 2009 at 8:34 am
PC- no I agree. I guess I look at it from the stand point though that you are now in a mode of constant ‘look out’. But I see what you are saying and your point.
And you are right, most often you should take control of a situation, not let the situation control you.
Vixen Says:October 28th, 2009 at 8:35 am
Jessica- I agree, you do (and I did) have to look at it from all perspectives and angles. But at the end of the day, I’m still choosing a stranger over the life of one of my own children or my husband.

If I could push the button and make sure that Cameron Diaz was the one to die, I’d have the button pushed before the lid was open.
I’ll take $250K if she’ll just stop acting (or trying to)
The Dirty Side of US Says:October 28th, 2009 at 10:06 am
I would have to push it….the thought of losing anyone in my family makes my heart hurt.
Joker_SATX Says:October 28th, 2009 at 10:17 am
People I don’t know die every day….People I know die every day…I will die someday when someone else on the other side of the world pushes the button….
….Bring on the Benjamins!

Why not someone is pushing my god damn buttons all day long! :-)
Chef Troll Says:October 28th, 2009 at 11:34 am
I’d push it. There’s at least a 50/50 chance whoever gets offed deserved it.
matt Says:October 28th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
I’d push it only to save family. Sorry, random person somewhere in the world.
frenchies Says:October 28th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Ok so I am on the button pushing boat. I am kinda cold-hearted I’ll admit it but I would defiantly push that button.
And in my mind I’d keep reminding myself that the “someone” that died was likely someone who had it coming. Hell maybe if I pushed the button I’d be offing the next Hitler, or Bin Laden, or Manson, or someone. See I’d be doing you a favor hence the financial reward!
I am looking forward to seeing this movie just as a side note.
Dana Says:October 29th, 2009 at 5:11 am
First scenario, no – I wouldn’t push it. Someone in my family is going to die? Hmmmm … I’d be pushing – even if it *was* husband!
