DISCLAIMER:
I’ve brought up smoking before. I think it’s a disgustingly gross, stinky, unhealthy habit that effects not just the person choosing to participate in it, but also those around them. Society has changed, times have changed. What was once considered ‘cool’ and ‘in’ is now looked down upon by many, most establishments (in my state anyway) prohibit smoking inside and with in a certain distance outside of them.  I’m not looking to debate smoking or legalities/rights.  The last time I brought up smoking here I got into a pissing match with someone over the U.S’s ‘need’ for tobacco.  It doesn’t matter to me.  I choose not to smoke.  I choose not to date people who smoke.  I’ll do everything in my power to impress upon my children not to start.  I love, love, love that restaurants and bars prohibit smoking inside.  BUT those who continue to still smoke, it’s a whatever to me.  More power to you.  My sister (and best friend) smokes.  I wish she wouldn’t.  I worry for her long term health.  She knows how I feel, there is no need to harp on her or make her feel badly about it.  My sister is a very polite smoker.  I love that about her.

Now again, the main reason I bring all this up is *NOT* to debate smoking but rather a logistic in regards to it.  I have friends who just bought a house together, up until this point they have shared an apartment together.  Joe smokes.  Trina does not.  Trina doesn’t love that Joe smokes, they have discussed that someday she would like him to quit, he agrees that he would like to at some point.  She’s not riding him to quit *right now*.  But here is the thing.  She doesn’t want him to smoke in their new house.  He thinks he should be allowed to smoke wherever he wants in their new house.  That it’s the one and only place he can sit comfortably and do it….  as a smoker he has NO WHERE to smoke anymore, no place he’s able to enjoy a cigarette with out having to freeze his ass off outside.  He wants to be able to sit back on his couch, watch tv and enjoy a cigarette when he feels like it.

Her point is their entire house is going to reek of smoke.  That buying this house is an investment and if they ever wanted to sell it in the future it would be more difficult bc of the smoke.  Now to clarify, Trina is not asking Joe to quit, only that he not smoke inside their home.  I guess I’m a bit ignorant in this matter bc it didn’t even occur to me that people still DID smoke in their houses.  Every smoker I know does so OUTSIDE.  My sister goes outside to smoke.  She always has.  Even pre-children and when her husband smoked as well (he quit a number of years back) they both went outside to smoke.  Rain, snow, sleet, bitter cold temps…..always outside.  Smoke permeates EVERYTHING it comes in contact with…the walls, the carpet, the furniture, drapery……

This has become a really big deal for the two of them.  Neither is wanting to back down on this.  I’m really interested in what others have to say on this.  I’d like to hear from smokers as well as non-smokers.

******

Happy HUMP Day!!!

He shouldn’t smoke in the house. Forget resale, investment, etc.

Smoking in the house leaves carcinogens everywhere that are toxic long after the cigarette is stamped out, never mind that second hand smoke in study after study is shown to be nearly as dangerous as first hand smoking. Even more so if there are young lungs around.

Trina loves Joe and puts up with his smoking. Lucky Joe.

If Joe really loves Trina, the least he can do is not smoke in their house for her health. Let’s not even get into the heartache he is potentially causing her if he does develop lung and/or heart conditions because of HIS choice to smoke.

Sorry Joe, smoke ‘em if you have to, just don’t endanger your loved ones around you. Pull on the leather and snow boots and fire up outside.

    End of lecture.

  2.   Petal Says:

I have to admit that I indulge in the filthy habit…but, I do smoke outside and would never, ever consider doing so inside. It really does wreck the inside of a house and gets into every nook and cranny, leaving the whole house smelling foul. The thought of scrubbing nicotine stains off a ceiling would be enough to discourage the most heartiest of faggers, I would have thought! Tell Joe to man up to the weather and take it outside.

  3.   Alfie Says:

I am pleasantly surprised at how many people, including tradesmen, now voluntarily go outside other people’s houses to smoke. I wonder if they all do so at home? When the smoking-ban was imposed in pubs here, one guy said we non-smokers were condemning his children to cancer because he would now have to smoke in the family home. Doh!

  4.   ~K Says:

Well first off I find it interesting considering your views on smoking that you consistently use a sultry avatar that is engaged in …smoking and making it look sexy :-) just sayin it seems diametrically opposed with your views

We had this problem with our brother in law before he died. He rented home form us and we didnt want him smoking in it. I don’t think he always abided by our rules for one and the place stunk of smoke. Here is the other thing Phil smoked in his apartment before he moved to our house. His clothes, his furniture it all stunk of smoke, so even if Joe smokes outside he is going to bring that smell in. Another thing smokers do is they are still exhaling smoke long after that last puff and some of it is not even visible, so the smoke smell is gonna get in that new house.

I guess the point I am getting to is they better figure out fast because as long as Joe smokes the smell aint going away and it sounds like they could be in for some rocky times ahead.

  5.   Chef Troll Says:

Lord, spare us from the Anti-Tobacco Fanatics some of whom are clinically obese, haven’t exercised since the 70s, and are BIG fans of smoking marijuana by some strange logic. What, it SMELLS better? Marijuana smoke DOESN’T contain carcinogens?

The dangers of “second-hand” smoke have been exaggerated to the point of aburdity. The idea that carcinogens remain embedded in drapes and the like is ridiculous. And the idea that you can’t sell a house because tobacco was smoked in it is beyond absurd.

A competent cleaning crew can remove all traces from YEARS of tobacco smoking in less than a day.

Yes, Anti-Tobacco Fanatics will CLAIM they can still smell smoke but they’re deluded fanatics.

My solution for the couple is to build a garage. That’s where I used to smoke when I smoked. And, no the “horrible stench” did not flow through CONCRETE into the house.

  6.   Vixen Says:

Sam- awesome, you have said it best of all. Thank you! :)

  7.   Vixen Says:

Petal- you are like my sister, what I consider a ‘polite smoker’ ;)

  8.   Vixen Says:

Alfie- gotta love what that smoker said about condemning his children. *shaking head* Yes…ALL those non-smokers are doing that to his children. Doh.

  9.   Vixen Says:

K- ah….see, I use that button for Controversial Question Wednesday *on purpose*, bc IMO it IS a Controversial photo. The picture was chosen for the CQW avatar on purpose. ;)

  10.   Vixen Says:

Troll- I hardly think disliking smoking makes me or Trina “Anti-Tobacco Fanatics”. Just sayin…. (nor are we clinically obese, marijuana smokers)

  11.   PC Says:

CT: What are you ranting about? Obesity, marijuana?

What do these things have to do with the topic? Are you suggesting that those of us who don’t like smoke are fat, pot-smoking lobbyists against the tobacco industry?

The shit stinks. I was at my Jiu Jitsu dojo on Monday when a new guy came in wanting to study. I can tell you that I would hate to be the guy who trains with him. He smelled like smoke from across the room.

While it’s certainly a person’s right to smoke, it’s equally the right of non-smokers to have nothing to do with them.

Ultimately, liberty isn’t the ability to push our vices, habits, beliefs onto those around us. It’s the ability to enjoy them regardless of those around us. Sometimes that means we have to make sacrifices or special concessions to do so.

  12.   ~K Says:

off topic..PC I am a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu..one of my favorite martial arts. What style or school just out of curiosity?

  13.   Jormengrund Says:

I am an ex-smoker. (Being in the military before quitting really did help me go cold turkey!)

I wouldn’t smoke in the house, and rarely smoked around friends and family if invited over. I don’t know if it was me personally, but since I never liked having smoke clouds around me, I figured that they wouldn’t really appreciate it, either.

Now I’ve heard that they’ve got a new invention for smokers. It’s a tobacco-less pipe. It still gives the taste and flavor of smoking, but NO smoke side-effects. In fact, you get smoke, but as water vapor rings, and not actual carcinogen laden haze.

I don’t know if it’s really a viable product, but heck, it sounds kind of nifty.

    Thanks for the post Vixen!

Got stuck staring at the great ass in the pic…
As I *think* I have mentioned here before I am a smoker (in a constant struggle to quit). I like to think I am a polite smoker, I do so outside, dispose of the nasty butts, wash my hands after, etc. I do not think her asking him to smoke outside is unrealistic at all. Smoke does permeate *everything* and with her being a non-smoker she has a right to clean air. My SO is an ex-smoker and I hate him even coming outside around my smoking. I do not want to impose my habit on those I love nor chance the ramifications of second hand smoke. Plus with them having a new home and him stating he hopes to quit *someday* he should look at the long term- it will be easier to quit someday if he never gets accustomed to associating many inside things with smoking. They will also save long term with less costs involved with re-painting and treating walls, ceilings, and floors.

  15.   vixen kitten Says:

Having worked with real estate agents for a while I can tell you that a cleaning crew, no matter how good, are able to erase years of damage a smoker does to the inside of a home. That comment is just plain bullshit. Maybe if the cleaning crew is tearing out and replacing all the drywall, and replacing ever inch of flooring they could, but most people would rather just skip the whole remodel and buy a home from a non smoker.

I always love when ex smokers make comments like that, since they never really regain their sense of smell that they blew away from their years of smoking.

There is no exergation to the dangers of second hand smoke. The only reason it hasn’t been completely banned is because of money, and the amount the tobacco industry shoves up the ass of greedy politicians.

For the record, I’m NOT obese! Most days the scale says about 105. I have exercised pretty much every day since the 70’s. Ok, well there were years in there where I was in diapers, so I think get a pass on those years. I run 6 miles a day, and only consume my pot in the form of brownies and cookies! *snort*

I’m sorry, but that argument wouldn’t make sense even if I was stoned!

  16.   nitebyrd Says:

As a smoker, I have to agree with Trina. You don’t smoke inside. If she’d like to really drive the point home to Joe, take him to a hotel that has smoking rooms. Once inside, he’ll totally understand. You’re absolutely correct, no matter how well you clean it doesn’t go away. The smell, the sticky tar, etc. permeate everything. The health issues are also something he needs to consider. Joe is just going to have to put on his big boy pants and go outside.

  17.   rage Says:

I used to smoke and have done the “smoke inside and smoke outside” thing.

Now since I don’t smoke anymore I would have to say that it would probably be best that he smoke outside.

However, she knew ahead of time that he smoked and that this may very well be an issue and didn’t have a problem with him smoking inside before whether or not it was a house.

    So….

  18.   PC Says:

    Hey K,

Sorry I didn’t see your comment back to me till Vix sent it to me a few minutes ago.

I’m studying Gracie Jiu Jitsu at Infinite Mixed Martial Arts in Loveland.

  19.   Topaz Says:

    I wish I had seen this sooner…

I’m a smoker (smoker-lite, these days). H is a heavy smoker. We have a condo. We both smoke outside.

When we come back in, we close the door quickly. I hate the smell. I get it off me asap. H reeks of smoke – his jacket, his sweater, pants, everything. I can’t kiss him like that. Our diet is fairly low fat, and we’re moderately active. Smoking is the most unhealthy thing we do.

I’m a smoker who hates smoke. The smell nauseates me. It tightens and scratches my throat. I refuse to have the trace of it in the house.

Love can’t choose smokers or non-smokers. But love should compromise on the dos and don’ts of smoking. And compromise does not include modifying physical revulsion – it’s physically impossible. Whomsoever enjoys smoking that much should create an outside (or garage) area that’s comfortable enough for smoking. Including me.

  20.   The Panserbjørne Says:

Asking someone else to put up with your secondhand smoke, in YOUR own safe space, is not reasonable. Even if the house is a joint ownership thing, if you have to live in that house, you should not be expected to deal with the smoke smell.

Joe is out of line. He may not like it, but he ought to get used to smoking outside….or buy a house of his own, where he can smoke in solitary comfort (the operative word being “solitary”).

For my part, if I am dealing with smokers at their house, I keep my mouth shut. If somebody lights up in my home or my car, they get asked nicely to put it out or take it outside. I’m reasonable about it, but I am NOT going to have that smoke smell in my own place.

  21.   NY Diva Says:

I’m with you, I don’t know any smokers who smoke inside their own homes. They realize it’ll mess up the house and want to keep it nice!
