I'm with you, I don't know any smokers who smoke inside their own homes. They realize it'll mess up the house and want to keep it nice!

Asking someone else to put up with your secondhand smoke, in YOUR own safe space, is not reasonable. Even if the house is a joint ownership thing, if you have to live in that house, you should not be expected to deal with the smoke smell.

Joe is out of line. He may not like it, but he ought to get used to smoking outside....or buy a house of his own, where he can smoke in solitary comfort (the operative word being "solitary").

For my part, if I am dealing with smokers at their house, I keep my mouth shut. If somebody lights up in my home or my car, they get asked nicely to put it out or take it outside. I'm reasonable about it, but I am NOT going to have that smoke smell in my own place.

I wish I had seen this sooner...

I'm a smoker (smoker-lite, these days). H is a heavy smoker. We have a condo. We both smoke outside.

When we come back in, we close the door quickly. I hate the smell. I get it off me asap. H reeks of smoke - his jacket, his sweater, pants, everything. I can't kiss him like that. Our diet is fairly low fat, and we're moderately active. Smoking is the most unhealthy thing we do.

I'm a smoker who hates smoke. The smell nauseates me. It tightens and scratches my throat. I refuse to have the trace of it in the house.

Love can't choose smokers or non-smokers. But love should compromise on the dos and don'ts of smoking. And compromise does not include modifying physical revulsion - it's physically impossible. Whomsoever enjoys smoking that much should create an outside (or garage) area that's comfortable enough for smoking. Including me.

I used to smoke and have done the "smoke inside and smoke outside" thing.

Now since I don't smoke anymore I would have to say that it would probably be best that he smoke outside.

However, she knew ahead of time that he smoked and that this may very well be an issue and didn't have a problem with him smoking inside before whether or not it was a house.

As a smoker, I have to agree with Trina. You don't smoke inside. If she'd like to really drive the point home to Joe, take him to a hotel that has smoking rooms. Once inside, he'll totally understand. You're absolutely correct, no matter how well you clean it doesn't go away. The smell, the sticky tar, etc. permeate everything. The health issues are also something he needs to consider. Joe is just going to have to put on his big boy pants and go outside.

Having worked with real estate agents for a while I can tell you that a cleaning crew, no matter how good, are able to erase years of damage a smoker does to the inside of a home. That comment is just plain bullshit. Maybe if the cleaning crew is tearing out and replacing all the drywall, and replacing ever inch of flooring they could, but most people would rather just skip the whole remodel and buy a home from a non smoker.

I always love when ex smokers make comments like that, since they never really regain their sense of smell that they blew away from their years of smoking.

There is no exergation to the dangers of second hand smoke. The only reason it hasn't been completely banned is because of money, and the amount the tobacco industry shoves up the ass of greedy politicians.

For the record, I'm NOT obese! Most days the scale says about 105. I have exercised pretty much every day since the 70's. Ok, well there were years in there where I was in diapers, so I think get a pass on those years. I run 6 miles a day, and only consume my pot in the form of brownies and cookies! *snort*

I'm sorry, but that argument wouldn't make sense even if I was stoned!

Got stuck staring at the great ass in the pic...
As I *think* I have mentioned here before I am a smoker (in a constant struggle to quit). I like to think I am a polite smoker, I do so outside, dispose of the nasty butts, wash my hands after, etc. I do not think her asking him to smoke outside is unrealistic at all. Smoke does permeate *everything* and with her being a non-smoker she has a right to clean air. My SO is an ex-smoker and I hate him even coming outside around my smoking. I do not want to impose my habit on those I love nor chance the ramifications of second hand smoke. Plus with them having a new home and him stating he hopes to quit *someday* he should look at the long term- it will be easier to quit someday if he never gets accustomed to associating many inside things with smoking. They will also save long term with less costs involved with re-painting and treating walls, ceilings, and floors.

I am an ex-smoker. (Being in the military before quitting really did help me go cold turkey!)

I wouldn't smoke in the house, and rarely smoked around friends and family if invited over. I don't know if it was me personally, but since I never liked having smoke clouds around me, I figured that they wouldn't really appreciate it, either.

Now I've heard that they've got a new invention for smokers. It's a tobacco-less pipe. It still gives the taste and flavor of smoking, but NO smoke side-effects. In fact, you get smoke, but as water vapor rings, and not actual carcinogen laden haze.

I don't know if it's really a viable product, but heck, it sounds kind of nifty.

Thanks for the post Vixen!
