Has porn made men bad at sex?

I read an article (Internet porn is changing teen sex) and was just…..freaked out.  Apparently our ‘younger generation’ of boys are using porn as ‘how to manuals’.   Obviously the average teenage/young adult male can access porn of all types….through DVD’s, TV and ah yes, the INTERNET, it’s more readily available now then ever before.  They are taking bedroom advice from it….and developing completely ridiculous ideas about how women’s bodies should look and what women LIKE by watching porn.  *groan*

I guess I’m just amazed bc I think so much of the porn out there is so trashy and corny. I HATE badly done porn, I’ve mentioned before that I am a porn snob.  The whole scripted “oh baby come in my face, that’s how I like it” shit is stupid.  Nothankyou.   I like my porn realistic, not bad acting with completely ridiculous sex.  I like to watch [the good stuff] bc it’s a turn on, gets things going (sometimes).  Not bc I’m going to take notes on things I want to try.  (although that one scene in GGW with the Tootsie Roll pops has come in handy before….ahem)

“A general agreement among most of my friends is that if we watch porn, we kinda prefer to watch lesbian porn,” said a straight female friend of mine from Manhattan, echoing a sentiment I heard a lot when asking women what lessons guys should actually take from their porno. “I guess that stems from the fact that we’d rather watch footage of women actually enjoying themselves, not being sexually exploited by some hairless dude.” It’s the stuff panty raids are made of. Turns out that many women are doing exactly what horny teenage boys fantasize they do: dimming the lights, locking the door and turning themselves on with movies of other naked women. “Men should watch lesbian porn to see how the woman on the receiving end is actually enjoying herself,” said another friend, “not being ridden like a horse while standing on her head.”  Cord Jefferson, Nerve.com

So again to reitterate….porn is entertainment, NOT education.   Thoughts on this???

Has porn made (some) men bad at sex?

BTW….porn has *not* made my man bad at sex.  PC would rather watch America’s Next Top Model than porn (or as he so adorably calls it ‘pornO’)*snort*  It just isn’t his thing.  I rest assured that he will not be taking notes.  Ok, I did just remember a time when him and I watched one for comedic value and the girl spit all over her hand (ewww!!!) then proceeded to slap another girl’s girly bits.  *shudder*  We still joke about that scene.  And ohHELLno, he knew better than to ever try that move on me.

Studio porn does absolutely nothing for me. Amateur porn is another story….

I’d pay good money to see you and PC recreate that pose! Well, maybe not, but I’d sure like to see you guys try!

We so agree with you. And with Osbasso – although one problem is that many amateurs are now emulating the studio stuff, facials and all.

*raises hand* I’ve slept with a guy or two (possibly more if I allow myself to really analyze how bad they were) who had obviously learned from porn. It makes them very, very bad. Especially if they are virgins and have had no sexual partners to correct any of those misperceptions. Thankfully, I am one straight-talking biotch and fixed that up right quick. ;)

I’ve been watching porn in prodigious quantities since I saw my very first porn flick in 1970 (it was called “Touch Me”). Today’s porn is vastly more varied than it was in those so called “golden years.” But at no point in the long history has there been any depiction worthy of being seen as educational. I do agree with Osbasso that my taste definitely runs to amateur porn, but even much of that is now subject to higher production standards and appears more and more scripted. At least it uses real people with real bodies, and that alone can make many of us feel better about ourselves.

I will say that I think the accessibility of porn today is actually a pretty good thing for loosening some of this country’s ridiculous attitudes about sex. I used to have to go to seedy adult theaters to get my fix. Now, it is literally everywhere I look. That makes me happy.

I shudder at the idea of my kids learning about sex by watching porn. Not that I have a problem with them watching them (someday, NOT soon, of course!), but I hope they don’t think that porn sex is how sex is/should be.

Aww… I can’t believe you wrote this. I just ordered a new tool belt and was saving the hair shavings from my last cut to glue to my chest, legs and arms. And I thought for sure you’d like me to flick you down there. That one chick sure got a kick out of it.

first you and I have again picked the same pic. (I have this one saved for use later ;) ) I guess we both just have good taste – duh !!!

I think using porn as an education is like saying that having a subscription to Parent magazine gives you a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education… it just doesn’t work. That is not it’s (intended) purpose.

Goodness. If you want an education get a book or movie intended for that purpose and then use the porn to get the mood set. But, bad porn is bad porn – yuk!

However PC in a tool belt? yeah that wouldn’t be bad ;)

Found the linked article kind of disturbing but not surprising. It’s just another example of Generation Yo! being detached from reality. And, for most, yet another thing they will prove themselves incompetent at.

The problem is porn teaches you that the biggest sex organ is between the legs, and in truth its between the ears. If all great sex was a matter of friction then porn is PhD level material. However I believe great sex is so much more than just the act and you are never going to get that from a porn. Still it has its place in being titillating and every once in a whole you can get a new idea from porn. Kids stop watching porn!…it’ll stunt your growth …sounds silly I know, but when you are my age you will understand.

Has porn made (some) men bad at sex?
Yes. It has made those who think it is an instruction manual, bad at sex. No one should use a Vince Vaughn movie as a relationship instruction manual, but I am sure some have. No one should use Dogma for theological/spiritual research, but I am sure some have.

In my “post-divorce put my dick into anyone who would let me” phase, I had a six hour relationship with a girl who had watched too much porn, too much bad porn. She was the worse sexual partner of my life. I had another girl told me on out first meeting that it wouldn’t work out because I needed “a wild girl and [she] don’t even do anal.” She proceed to give me a the names and numbers a couple of her friends. I had other experiences during that time that made very aware at how much the sexual landscape had changed during my 14 years of marriage.

“Researchers” back in the mid-1990′s blamed Bill Clinton’s tryst with Monica Lewinski for a shift (maybe a perceived shift) of the “bases” among young adults. Blow jobs had allegedly replaced kissing and rainbow parties sprang into existence. I think the absurdity of the abstinence only eduction that has led tho the belief that oral and anal sex doesn’t cost a girl her virginity, is a more likely culprit.

OS- you scared me for a brief moment…I was relieved to find out you were only requesting a remake of the *photo*! ;)

NY Diva- good for you for showing them the light! *LOL* Someone needs to tell them!

Bobf- Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m not arguing *against* porn. I totally agree that it has helped aide society in loosening up some in regards to sexual open-ness and I think of that as a good thing.

  12.   VixenNo Gravatar Says:

Hubman- exactly, luckily as parents as open as you and ASM are you can help educate them better (KWIM???) :)

PC- that’s how long it’s been since you’ve watched hetero porn. It’s not been since the SEVENTIES that the men were uber hairy, LOLOLOLOL Now they are completely shaven and well greased from head to toe ;)
    *snort*

  13.   VixenNo Gravatar Says:

Chef Troll- uh yeah…the linked article, esp some direct quotes taken from some young people were HIGHLY disturbing!

K- YEP. You are so so so right. On so many levels. :)

    BD- good analogy! LOL

You know, I think you brought up a very good point. I would have to agree with you on that one.

I just recently had this conversation with someone about this exact topic. We both agreed that porn is a bad example for everyone. Men who don’t look like the guys feel inadequate. Men who are with women who don’t look or act like it, feel either the women fall short or their skills. Overall – bad idea.

I guess I’m thankful that I found my parents’ copy of the Joy of Sex when I was a teenager so I had a pretty realistic view of sex. :)

Interesting question. I look at porn as a quick-release kind of thing. I don’t use it to get ideas, or to model my own behavior, and am saddened (but completely unsurprised) that a new generation of kids are in fact using it as reference points themselves. With the preponderance of free stuff that’s available in a million ways, it’s natural they’re going to see it, but there ought to be some common sense involved that hey, these people are ACTING (even if they’re acting really badly).

For filmed sex, I tend to prefer amateur stuff nowadays. The performers may not be as pretty plastic perfect as the “professionals”, but it’s more REAL, with all the screwups and real heat that that entails.

Oh well. The kids’ll figure it out pretty quickly when they get involved with someone more experienced who’ll go “get that weak shit OUT of here” and set them (hopefully) on the right path. :)

I can’t *stand* it when the chick (or sometimes dude himself) spits on the dick for ‘lube’. So…unsexy. Gross! Or when a fly is hovering around. *snort*
