It’s not just about smoking in the bathroom anymore ~CQW

(click the button for more info, email me if you have any great ideas for a topic, I’d love to hear from you!)

The state I live in has a statewide smoking ban, banning smoking in all enclosed workplaces, bars, restaurants and casinos. One other county has passed an additional ban….including enclosed porches, balconies, patios.
Now a law is trying to be pushed through banning smoking in people’s cars (public transportation is already banned) while their children are present. This is causing a fair amount of controversy.
The argument for is obviously to protect children from second hand smoke, concern for their health.
The argument against is as simple as- “What’s next…my house?!”
I do have issues with our need as a society to have the government intervene on everything. All these laws…for things that should be common sense are ridiculous to me. So I see both sides. I mean, we have laws requiring children under a certain age and weight to be required to be in a car seat. We have a seat belt law, which drivers can be fined for if in violation. I guess if enough people are NOT using their common sense and putting their children in danger….

huh? what was the question again? lost track after that pic

It’s quite similar here in Australia. In public there’s no smoking in non-residential buildings, or within 4 metres of the entrances (you can and will be fined if caught). You can’t smoke in/on public transport and to be honest, I can’t ever recall being able to in my lifetime (I’m in my mid-20′s).
As for the not smoking in cars with children, you can’t do that here. Well not if the children are under 16 years old (which also happens to be the age of consent), otherwise you can be charged for this too.
Besides these places/situations/circumstances you can smoke wherever you like. As for what I think regarding the banning of it in cars (which I think is what you’re asking?), I support the law that we have here. I think it’s totally acceptable to limit the damage we do to our children’s future health (even if unintentionally), in this way.
On the same token though, I can see why people are up in arms about it….it has got that ‘what next, my home?’ feel about it. But then again, given that smoking is a health concern and can/does cause damage (that costs money to fix), I understand the Government attempting to do their best to help with this (assuming their intentions are good and it’s not just a revenue raiser).
There’s my two cents :-)

oh and yes- our state has had a no smoking law everywhere (including within a certain feet of gover. buildings) for quite a few years now. I LOVE it. However- car, house….. nooooo that is private property and should be the person’s decision

BD- yeah….the pic…. yeah…. *grins* (me too)

Lucy- interesting, I had no idea of your laws. I appreciate your input!
VixenSeptember 29th, 2010 at 7:39 am
BD- see. That is how I was feeling as well. That really until they make cigarettes illegal (which lets be honest, they won’t) it’s difficult to say you can’t do something in your car or your home.
But as Lucy pointed out, it would be ‘limiting’ the damage to our children’s health. IDK…..
But thanks for your opinion. :)

I don’t like that the government can tell us what to do in our homes or cars either. But… I have to say that I can smell cigaretts from other cars and it makes me feel ill. I wouln’t hate the law, just the concept behind it!

You cannot legislate stupidity away. Mankind is too stupid.

I really had a response to this..and then I saw the picture you posted with your question and I TOTALLY forgot what it was…

I’m all for smoke-free bars and restaurants and workplaces…. but seriously… that’s getting a bit crazy.
As usual, 5% of the population ruins it for everyone else…
JeffSeptember 29th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
Vixen, with that pic how do you expect anyone to give a rational, well thought out answer?
Anyway, here is my sorry attempt. To me it’s about protecting children who don’t have the capacity to protect themselves. I do think it is entirely appropriate to forbid people to smoke in their car or house if there are children present. Those children have not chosen to smoke themselves yet are subject to the health risks that go with it. In my opinion you have every right to ruin your own health but you do not have the right to ruin the health of an innocent party no matter who’s property it is on.

that picture is very sexy.
well, it’s the people out there that show NO signs of common sense that make all these get out of hand, for sure. as you know, i smoke. i do not do it around my kids, i go on my balcony. now…if someone passed a law saying i couldn’t do that, i would find it upsetting. i’m not condonning smoking even…it’s a sucky habit. i don’t mind being a certain distance from public places, i dont’ feel offended if someone doesn’t want me smoking too close. i value personal space and try to respect others. there’s my bit. i missed you.
